Dear Fr. Chiarello,
I would hereby like to thank you for the invitation extended to speak at the International Forum on Migration and Peace, organized by the Scalabrini International Migration Network (SIMN), the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, and the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.
Unfortunately, due to prior commitments, I will not be able to attend, nor participate in the Forum.
I could not agree more with the way you have framed your discussion: human mobility can benefit both the host communities and the countries of origin of migrants, provided that we work together to manage such a historic phenomenon in a more effective and humane way.
It would not make sense to conceive migration as a fight between the North and the South of the world, the rich and the developing countries. Only if we cooperate – building new partnerships across continents and cultures – can we turn the dramatic experience of so many people leaving their homes into an opportunity for all. An opportunity of human development for those who leave, for those who stay and for those who welcome.
Building partnerships, in solidarity: this is the path marked by Pope Francis, during his visits in Lampedusa and Lesbos, and during his entire papacy. It is also the European way to manage human mobility, in constant cooperation with our partners from Africa, the Middle East and all corners of the world.
I hope you have a successful conference and remain very interested in being informed of the outcome.
Yours sincerely,
Federica Mogherini
